"Myself and my girlfriends stay at Hotel Cassia was an enjoyable one, solely because of its location i believe it is quite specific in who it will appeal to. Due to the excellent public transport system in and around Rome getting from the hotel into the centre was both cheap and easy but Hotel Cassia is not somewhere you just pop back to because you've forgotten something as it would probably be an hour and a half round trip. After leaving Hotel Cassia we spent a further two nights in rome at a hotel in the centre with some friends and appreciated how lucky we'd been at Cassia. In summary the hotel is clean, quiet, friendly and excellent value for money but it is very much on the outskirts of the city though well served by reliable, clean public transport. I would recommend."

La Tana dell'Istrice (The porcuspine's lair) originated in wine producer Sergio Mottura's decision to transform the original family home into a small and welcoming hotel, where you may enjoy the quit of a village surrounded by verdant fields and vineyards, as well as take advantage of many an opportunity to explore the neighbouring area. The Hotel is situated in a manor house of medieval origin, restored in the sixteenth century, in the heart of Civitella d'Agliano, a small agricultural centre located between Orvieto and Viterbo. Civitella developed around the original medieval village, founded about 1026, of which the watch-tower and rock overlooking the central square just in front of the Hotel, are still extant. The Mottura estate, consisting of some 130 hectares nestled on the border of Northern Lazio and Umbria between the hills and the clay canyons of Civitella d'Agliano to the west and the fertile plain of the Tiber Valley to the East The natural beauty of the area has remained untouched by urbanisation and industrial development and still offers breath-taking landscapes, dotted with woods, lakes and numerous torrents, although it is only 100 km. from Rome and 160 km. from Florence. The estate has been in the Mottura family since 1933 and they have been actively involved in the conservation of the area. In the 1960's the Mottura's began modernising their farming methods on the estate: they switched over from share-cropping to direct cultivation and began research into the best use to be made of the soil.
On the gentle slopes of the hillsides vines have found their natural habitat and prosper in the volcanic soil.Records in the archives of Orvieto prove that these hills were particularly suited to the cultivation of vines as far back as in 1929 in so much as some of the best Orvieto wine was even then produced here. As in many other areas the old vineyards, planted generation ago, "married" the vines to trees that would support them, according to the method massed down from the Etruscans.These have gradually been replaced by specialised vineyards, which now extend to 60 hectares and every year new ones are planted to ensure that the quality of the wines will remain as high in the future.
In chosing the varieties an important place has always been reserved for the local indigenous vines and clones have been selected on the basis of bearing fruits with all the best qualities essential to wine making; extensive cultivation in the same area over many years has brought about a natural selection of those more resistant to disease.
Many itineraries are available: Orvieto is only 18 kilometres away from Civitella, and both Rome and Florence may be rapisly reached by rail or motorway. Equally close and directly connected are Siena and the Etruscan towns of Tarquinia and Tuscania and, moving into Umbria, Todi, Spoleto, Deruta, Perugia and the Franciscan towns of Assisi and Gubbio.
The Argentario or the Duna Feniglia and its beautiful beach in the Maremma are only a one-hour drive away, for those who fancy a trip to the seaside. However, swimming sailing and windsurfing may also be practised in the nearby volcanic lakes: Bolsena, with its wonderfully limpid waters and the small lake of Vico, situated amongst the chestnut groves in a magnificent scenery. Not far from Civitella is also the golf course "Le Querce" of Nepi-Sutri. For mountain lovers, on the other hand, the area offers the superb chestnut and beech forests of the Monti Cimini or the Monte Amiata, which in the winter is also a skiing resort.Viterbo, the main town of the Tuscia - that is the ancient name for the region in which we are presently located - also offers the pleasurable benefits of its thermal waters: "Bulicame" and "Bagnacci", with their natural baths into which slightly sulphureous water from the hot springs has been channelled, or the centre of "Terme dei Papi", open throughout the year, with its warm open-air swimming pool, saunas and mud-therapy, massage facilities and beauty centre. Saturnia, a similarly renowned thermal centre, is not far from Civitella, as are many other less famous places which exploit the volcanic springs pervasive throughout the region. For those who may not wish to roam too far afield, Civitella itself and its immediate surroundings offer many amenities, e.g. fully equipped facilities for playing tennis, for horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling. The "Oasi di Alviano", a nature reserve managed by WWF situated on the banks of the Tiber, offers opportunities for birdwatching and guided tours. Finally, only a few kilometres away from the village are the famous "Parco dei Mostri" (Monsters Park) of Bomarzo and, perched on a clay wall typical of this landscape, Civita di Bagnoregio, the illustrious "dying town". The Estate of Santa Cristina is placed in Lathium in the village of Magliano Sabina (Rieti). The property is formed by two similar villas that both have a private garden with pergola. Each villa sleeps eight and is divided in the following way.
Ground floor: large living room with cable TV, dining area, fireplace, large south-facing sun window, full fitted kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and oven, breakfast room, twin bedded room with ensuite bathroom (disabled wc).
First floor: double bedded room with ensuite bathroom, two twin bedded rooms with ensuite bathrooms.
The swimming-pool, shared between the two villas, is immersed in its own garden with views of the estate. There are 2 dressing rooms, each with showers, wc and sink.

Casale Doria Pamphilj at Testa di Lepre is a 16th Century Grain Barn, part of the Doria Pamphilj farm village. After careful restoration the Casale is now ready to be used for Agriturism. Known as a settlement from Etruscan times the farm at Testa di Lepre has been in the Pamphilj family since 1649 when it was bought by Olimpia Maidalchini (sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X and administrator of the Pamphilj properties) The working "Farm Home Casale Doria Pamphili" has two herds of cattle one producing milk for the local market and one bred on the farm for meat.
The building has been carefully converted to cater for visitors of all ages. There is a large safe garden area and all of the public rooms and most of the apartments are accesible to wheelchairs. There is a lift and two of the apartments are specially equipped for handicapped guests.
The Eight apartments are all on the first floor of the casale opening on to the garden corridor. Every apartment is self contained and on two open levels The lower level consists of a sitting/dining area with a kitchen corner and one or two bathrooms (some with showers and some with bath tubs) In the larger apartments there is a bedroom on this level. In most of the apartments there is a spiral staicase leading up from the sitting room to a small sitting area overlooking the internal garden. In all the apartments there is a wooden staircase up to a double gallery bedroom.
The furnishing is simple and comfortable and all of the windows have views over the surrounding countryside. The small fitted kitchens have a sink, refrigerator and microwave oven and come with china, cutlery, glass and sufficient equipment for the preparation of simple meals.
There are no gas rings or electric hot plates. The water from all the taps in the building is good and safe drinking water
All the apartments have telephone and television with a selection of local and satellite television channels. There are extra phone plugs for computer connection. The building has been restored with security in mind. All of the apartments have a reinforced front door and the public areas of the building are equipped with closed circuit anti intrusion video cameras .
All the apartments are equipped with smoke alarms and fire extiguishers
Bed linen and towels are provided and changed weekly. We ask our guests to bring there own towels for use at the beach.
Welcome Pack. Each apartment is provided with small quantities of a few basic things. Oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, a small amount of sugar, coffee, tea, soap and loo paper. We are very happy to provide you with a welcome pack for you arrival consisting of:
Loaf of bread, 1 ltr milk, 25 tea bags, 250 gr ground coffee, 1 ltr orange juice, 2 ltrs mineral water, 250 gr butter, 500 gr honey or jam 1Kg sugar, 400gr biscuits, 1 Kg fresh fruit.
Laundry. The Casale laundry may be used by guests. An iron and ironing board are available in the laundry for guest use.
Casale Doria Pamphilj is in the small farm village on the Doria Pamphilj estate at Testa di Lepre di Sotto. The village (or 'Borgo') lies in a tranquil valley on the boundry of the city of Rome. It is 20Km from the city centre and the Vatican City and within easy reach of Civitavecchia, Viterbo, Orvieto, Spoleto and Tivoli.

While we were there we were the only guests, and we felt much more like houseguests than travellers in a hotel. We found it ideal as a place to spend our first two nights in Italy, recovering from jetlag, but it would also be good for longer stays, since each room (or small apartment, really) has at least some kitchen facilities. There are no real indoor public areas, and we had our breakfast out of doors, under a walnut tree. The place is beautiful."

Coming from Orte on the four lane highway, when you exit Viterbo Nord, it would probably help if the directions indicated that you should drive all the way through Viterbo (following the signs for Roma)BEFORE you started measuring the 3.5 kilometers on the Strada Cimino. We started to measure the 3,5 kilometers when we exited the 4 lane highway, but we still found it okay. It may also help to have a more detailed map showing the route from the exit to the turn off for the Club Roncone ridng school (which was very well marked). The dogs kept woke us up a bit, but it was no problem. I really enjoyed reading the local Viterbo recipes that were in the kitchen. I would definitely like to stay at La Meridiana again." |

By car
If you are arriving from Rome, take the Cassia Bis state-road towards Viterbo and follow directions towards Viterbo Sud. You will reach a set of traffic lights at the Porta Romana city-gate, where the city-walls first appear on your left. Continue straight ahead (alongside the city-walls) to a second set of traffic lights. Turn left at the lights, entering the city walls through the Porta della Verità gate, then right into Via Mazzini. Continue along Via Mazzini (which later becomes Via Casa di S.Rosa) to the end of the street, then turn left into via S.Rosa and head straight to piazza del Teatro.
By train
The apartment is situated around 250 metres from Viterbo's Porta Fiorentina railway station and can be easily reached on foot. Exiting the railway station, enter the Porta Fiorentina city-gate and head straight along via G Matteotti for around 200 metres, then turn left into via Marconi.
