Farm Home La Tana dell'Istrice - Civitella d'Agliano near Rome
Farm Home La Tana dell'Istrice in Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia 12 - 01020 Civitella d'Agliano near Rome - Latium countryside.
La Tana dell'Istrice (The porcuspine's lair) originated in wine producer Sergio Mottura's decision to transform the original family home into a small and welcoming hotel, where you may enjoy the quit of a village surrounded by verdant fields and vineyards, as well as take advantage of many an opportunity to explore the neighbouring area. Guests may witness the production cycle of Mr. Mottura's firm and, above all, sample its products, particularly a wide selection of wines.
The Hotel is situated in a manor house of medieval origin, restored in the sixteenth century, in the heart of Civitella d'Agliano, a small agricultural centre located between Orvieto and Viterbo. Civitella developed around the original medieval village, founded about 1026, of which the watch-tower and rock overlooking the central square just in front of the Hotel, are still extant. Wholly restructured, the house currently comprises seven comfortable double rooms and two suites, all included private bathroom, air conditioning and every facility designed to guarantee a pleasant stay.
The restaurant of la Tana offers a traditional cuisine and may be used for functions and tastings, while overlooking the square of Civitella is the Osteria dell'Istrice (The Porcuspine's tavern), a wine bar where you may enjoy a relaxing drink in a pleasant atmosphere. In the summer period, moreover, guests may make use of Mr. Mottura's private swimming-pool situated amongst the vineyards, only about one kilometre away from the village. Beneath the house, picturesque cellars carved out of the local stone, and reaching about 20 metres down into the earth, provide an ideal environments for the production and conservation of Mottura's sparkling wine.
The Mottura estate, consisting of some 130 hectares nestled on the border of Northern Lazio and Umbria between the hills and the clay canyons of Civitella d'Agliano to the west and the fertile plain of the Tiber Valley to the East The natural beauty of the area has remained untouched by urbanisation and industrial development and still offers breath-taking landscapes, dotted with woods, lakes and numerous torrents, although it is only 100 km. from Rome and 160 km. from Florence. The estate has been in the Mottura family since 1933 and they have been actively involved in the conservation of the area. In the 1960's the Mottura's began modernising their farming methods on the estate: they switched over from share-cropping to direct cultivation and began research into the best use to be made of the soil.
On the gentle slopes of the hillsides vines have found their natural habitat and prosper in the volcanic soil.Records in the archives of Orvieto prove that these hills were particularly suited to the cultivation of vines as far back as in 1929 in so much as some of the best Orvieto wine was even then produced here. As in many other areas the old vineyards, planted generation ago, "married" the vines to trees that would support them, according to the method massed down from the Etruscans. These have gradually been replaced by specialised vineyards, which now extend to 60 hectares and every year new ones are planted to ensure that the quality of the wines will remain as high in the future.
In chosing the varieties an important place has always been reserved for the local indigenous vines and clones have been selected on the basis of bearing fruits with all the best qualities essential to wine making; extensive cultivation in the same area over many years has brought about a natural selection of those more resistant to disease.
Many itineraries are available: Orvieto is only 18 kilometres away from Civitella, and both Rome and Florence may be rapisly reached by rail or motorway. Equally close and directly connected are Siena and the Etruscan towns of Tarquinia and Tuscania and, moving into Umbria, Todi, Spoleto, Deruta, Perugia and the Franciscan towns of Assisi and Gubbio.
The Argentario or the Duna Feniglia and its beautiful beach in the Maremma are only a one-hour drive away, for those who fancy a trip to the seaside. However, swimming sailing and windsurfing may also be practised in the nearby volcanic lakes: Bolsena, with its wonderfully limpid waters and the small lake of Vico, situated amongst the chestnut groves in a magnificent scenery. Not far from Civitella is also the golf course "Le Querce" of Nepi-Sutri. For mountain lovers, on the other hand, the area offers the superb chestnut and beech forests of the Monti Cimini or the Monte Amiata, which in the winter is also a skiing resort.Viterbo, the main town of the Tuscia - that is the ancient name for the region in which we are presently located - also offers the pleasurable benefits of its thermal waters: "Bulicame" and "Bagnacci", with their natural baths into which slightly sulphureous water from the hot springs has been channelled, or the centre of "Terme dei Papi", open throughout the year, with its warm open-air swimming pool, saunas and mud-therapy, massage facilities and beauty centre. Saturnia, a similarly renowned thermal centre, is not far from Civitella, as are many other less famous places which exploit the volcanic springs pervasive throughout the region. For those who may not wish to roam too far afield, Civitella itself and its immediate surroundings offer many amenities, e.g. fully equipped facilities for playing tennis, for horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling. The "Oasi di Alviano", a nature reserve managed by WWF situated on the banks of the Tiber, offers opportunities for birdwatching and guided tours. Finally, only a few kilometres away from the village are the famous "Parco dei Mostri" (Monsters Park) of Bomarzo and, perched on a clay wall typical of this landscape, Civita di Bagnoregio, the illustrious "dying town". Much more could be said to describe these locations. We invite you to visit us as to get to know better a place where life is sweet.

"The Motturas were most welcoming. We appreciated the wine tasting and tour of the wine cellars before dinner (twice). Food excellent and locals friendly. We didn't feel like hotel guests, more like house guests. Good time of year to go to catch the patron saint's festival. Certainly recommend it to anyone."

Annotations about Bed and Breakfast L'Elce BB in Velletri - Castelli Romani - travellers and tourists say about us:
"Accommodation is basic but clean and in keeping with the surroundings. Hospitality of host and staff excellent and food available any time."
"Trés bel endroit, presque magique si l'on cherche le calme et la tranquilité, mais difficile à trouver surtout lorsqu'on arrive de nuit. Acceuil trés chaleureux et prestations parfaites."
"We enjoyed our stay very much. The host, Valerio and family were very accommodating and helpful at all times. The B&B (old villa)is located in a very guiet country setting and 45 minutes to Rome by train. We had made our reservations for the L'Elce but ended up at the Il Casale B&B (associated with Colle Ionci) The actual address is 77 Via Acqua Lucia for Il Casale and 74 for the L'Elce B&B. Hard to locate for our first time to the Velletri area. Via Acqua Lucia is off S7(Via Appian Nord)from Velletri towards Rome. Turn right after Audi dealer or right again just after Alpha Romeo dealer and small local grocery and pizzeria. The owners also serve very good Italian meals, which is great after exploring Roma all day. Ask Valerio for the B.I.R.G. day transportation ticket and driving directions to the local train station. Enjoy."
"Though more spartan than luxurious we found the accommodation clean and comfortable and facilities adequate for our needs. Although we arrived fairly late in the evening the host provided a hot 4 course meal for us at very little notice which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We found the property had a good deal of old world charm and we liked the rural setting. It's very conveniently located for a first stop from the airport when arriving and indeed we chose to stay again for the last night of our holiday due to the convenience for Rome airport."
"The best place we stayed on our entire trip in Italy! Service and food was excellent and reasonably priced. Maria and staff were very welcoming and hospitable! Thanks to Valario, Maria, Katarina, Julio, and Mateo for showing us a great time in Velletri. The surroundings were very quaint. We will definetly return!"
"This was the perfect place for us. The centre of a thriving creative group, with a grand piano and wonderful people. By the end of our stay Valeriano was more than a host, he was a friend. When we were stranded in Rome (Notte Bianca Sept), he drove in to get us at 1.30 am. Altogether a peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle of travel. Very special."
"Our favorite place to stay during our Italian vacation. Excellent, welcoming staff. The restaurant served the best food we had in Italy. Beautiful countryside location, like a scene in a movie. The owner was so charming and helpful."
"I made this reservation without having heard of L'Elce and was very happy with the price and service. At 70 euros a night one can't expect bottles of shampoo and conditioner, but the room was spotless and the host couldn't have been more pleasant. Also, the breakfast was very good - eggs to order and this in a country where a croissant and coffee are considered breakfast. We'll definitely return."
"I loved staying at L'Elce. The rooms are basic but it is only bed and breakfast. However he style is lovely, the upkeep is very good and the price reasonable. One word of warning. Better in spring than summer as there is no air conditioning. Also the grounds are greener and even more lovely in spring. Even so, the surroundings are beautiful at any time and the hospitality of the host and staff wonderful. I fully intend to return on a regular basis."
